New Berlin, Pa.— 2015 Bassmaster All-State team member Nick Osman found the perfect fit for college April 15 when he signed a four-year scholarship offer to join the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) men’s bass fishing team.
SCAD Coach Isaac Payne started recruiting Osman after he saw the profile story on Osman on Bassmaster.com (Win changed Osman’s life on and off the water). Since Payne read about Osman winning the 2014 Bassmaster High School National Championship and his desire to be a cabinet maker, the coach thought SCAD would be a “great fit” for Osman. “I was very excited (that he was a great angler) and he was already interested in some of the majors we have at SCAD,” Payne said.
While visiting Osman in Pennsylvania, Payne got a chance to fish with his prize recruit for a couple of days. “I fished with Nick and his (high school) coach the first day and the second day it was Nick and me,” Payne said. “That was great because we got to spend some time together and we caught some smallmouth on the Susquehanna River.”
Meeting Coach Payne and finding out more about his program and the higher education opportunities the Georgia college offered him sold Osman on SCAD. “Coach Payne has a plan and I feel like he can get it done,” said Osman, who will major in furniture design. “I know SCAD is one of the best art design schools in the country so that kind of just sold itself.”
