![With a two-hour delay and tough conditions, the anglers struggled, but the standings were tight and all six anglers had a viable chance at winning today.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2589.jpg)

![The first angler I found was Ryan Butler who was in 2nd place with 3-10 after Day 1's action.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2601.jpg)
![He was excited to have a nice breeze and the opportunity for a morning bite with his Whopper Plopper.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2605.jpg)
![After a fish missed his bait, it didn't take long for his first hook up.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2611.jpg)
![Every bite has been crucial over the last two days.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2619.jpg)
![He raced to the back of the boat to keep tension on this fish.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2620.jpg)
![He swings it towards the boat.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2622.jpg)
![It was a smallmouth!](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2625.jpg)
![And a keeper for Butler.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2637.jpg)
![That's number one and it happened in the first 20 minutes of the day.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2643.jpg)
![Just a few casts later he has one blow up on it and miss, but it came back and ate his Whopper Plopper.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2650.jpg)
![This one seemed to be a bit stronger.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2655.jpg)
![He gains some leverage.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2657.jpg)

![A good largemouth for keeper number two.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2665.jpg)
![That got Butler fired up.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2679.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2685.jpg)
![Two fish in the boat before 7:30, both being bigger than his two fish on Day 1.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2688.jpg)
![He was so excited he gave a two-handed fist pump](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2695.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2700.jpg)
![He pulled up on an area that he and partner Dustin Lippe did so well on in the team portion of the event.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2702.jpg)
![An eagle flys overhead. In fact there were two flying together in that cove.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2705.jpg)
![Day 1 leader Robert Dodson Sr. heads toward the Dam.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2712.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2720.jpg)
![He races off to another spot and I bounce over to partner Dustin Lippe.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2747.jpg)
![Lippe was throwing a Whopper Plopper as well. That was a common denominator between the 6 anglers.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2749.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2751.jpg)
![He had two fish in the box already, which is a good sign since he zeroed on Day 1.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2756.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2772.jpg)
![He took off so I went in search of Day 1 leader Robert Dodson Sr.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2786.jpg)
![I found Dodson down towards the Dam in a pocket.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2788.jpg)
![He was flipping a jig around docks and shoreline cover.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2799.jpg)
![He didn't have a keeper yet so he was thinking and adjusting a few hours into the day.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2805.jpg)
![He picks the Whopper Plopper up and gives it a few casts before opting to leave.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2808.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2813.jpg)
![He changed creeks, but kept with the dock theme.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2818.jpg)
![He sets the hook and fights a fish.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2820.jpg)
![But it came off under the dock. He casted at every inch of water around the dock.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2828.jpg)
![He stayed warm with what I believe was coffee.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2830.jpg)
![And then he took off in search of greener pastures. He was struggling and didn't want his lead to slip away.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2834.jpg)
![ON my way back up the lake I found Butler.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2844.jpg)
![While I was driving to find him he hooked up with two fish and upped his total to 4. One fish was a heavy 2 pounder and the other was 4 pounds, 6 ounces, a game changer today.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2854.jpg)
![He hooked up with a fish on topwater.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2858.jpg)
![And eyeballed it to see if it was a keeper.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2868.jpg)
![It ended up being a 14-inch fish so he had to throw it back.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2874.jpg)
![](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2887.jpg)
![Butler controlled the leaderboard at noon when I left the water. He was one good keeper from locking up a 2018 Geico Bassmaster Classic berth at Lake Hartwell. But he would need to fend off the other anglers for the last three hours of the day.](http://www.bassmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/mg_2897.jpg)
