Elites stay busy during quarantine

As with most things in life, all B.A.S.S. tournaments have been put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. Albeit protected and protracted, life goes on. Prime spring fishing has been postponed, including Elite tournaments at Chickamauga Lake, Lake Eufaula and Santee Cooper Lakes. Anglers on all levels are itching to get back to competition. While social distancing, the 88 Elites have found myriad ways to fill their time, which the following images from their social media show.

Minnesota Elite Austin Felix offered another question, and answer, after government officials put measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “Does your mask match your jersey and boat wrap? I didn't think so ... ” Besides postponing all events through April and into May, B.A.S.S. instituted a Live Smart, Fish Smart initiative in hopes of helping combat an upward curve of cases.

Funny man Gerald Swindle posted a video titled Stupid News, covering how he and wife LeAnn are holding up in quarantine. “Ain’t too bad. Doing a little fishing, tend the garden, peed in the yard yesterday. I think I can get through this,” he deadpanned. “Ask me if I’m going stir crazy. Nope. Not yet … Ain’t watched the Tiger King, the Lion King or the Fire Tiger King or whatever … Don’t really know who Carole Baskin is and if she ate the donuts. Ain’t quite there yet … We holding up pretty good. Tomorrow, I’m going to pee in the yard twice. Ya’ll stay tuned. We going to get through this.” Fish like this Guntersville giant help.

After finishing 19th in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, Caleb Kuphall did some scouting before returning home to Wisconsin. “Finally got around to unpacking from the Bassmasters Classic,” he reported. “Had to find a special spot on the mantle for this piece of gold.” The dream of qualifying for the 2021 Classic, while on hold, remains.

Busy with interviews after winning the Classic on Lake Guntersville, Hank Cherry has been somewhat of a homebody in comparison to champions past. He showed a photo of his son, Christian, happy to finally receive some room decorations, then the wildly competitive boys, missing spring baseball, enjoy a “friendly game of corn hole … maybe.”

Over in Huntington, Texas, Keith Combs and wife, Jennifer were laying low but reeling them in. “Does a PB count if it’s from your own pond?” she pondered. “Heck yes it does! My previous PB was 10.25 caught in 2012 at Lake Falcon. This one was definitely bigger. Keith says pushing 11 but we didn’t have a scale handy. Caught her on a frog and she wrapped me in a lay down. Had to get in the kayak to go get her and try to get a pic before the storm. What a day and what a fish! Life is good!”

Sure, plenty went fishing, but others spent the time getting things done around the homestead. In southwest Missouri, Chad Morgenthaler knocked out a “few honey-do’s.” He added a couple hashtags, thankscoronavirus and ratherbefishing. No doubt.

Casey Carriere sent in some pics of Tyler and their boys, Carter and Liam, hitting the local pond, and it sounds like she was expecting dinner. “They were supposed to be fishing for perch, but evidently the bass were hungry!” And finding a baby turtle as the boys learned about the outdoors was just too cute to pass on.

You just have to drink a beer while she’s doing it to keep the masculine level up somewhat. They’re June-Bug though btw, not purple!” Well, that makes it OK then.

Garrett Paquette of Canton, Mich., had a field day before the lockdown on motor boats, catching about 35 of these with his Spro McStick on a new lake. Does anyone else do this? It works on almost all plastics!” Thank you.

Cliff Pirch was last contacted for a story on social distancing. He found that easy as national forest surrounds his hometown of Payson, Ariz., especially when he was scouring the hills for elk antler sheds. He apparently did that plenty, and he posed this question recently: “Bass fishing or horn hunting? Love em both.” Seems to be pretty good at both, too.

Leave it to the Zen Master, Rick Clunn, for developing a pattern for shed hunting. “Look along fence lines they have to jump, hoping the impact of their landing will jar the horns loose,” he wrote. “It is a little like fishing. You have to put yourself around them and the areas they congregate. I found one of these in a large field where you see the deer on a regular basis. The other was near a fence they had to jump. In another couple weeks the grass growth will hide them if the varmints don’t find them first. Well, they probably need them more than I do. I already know some of your Swindle-type comments. Have fun.”

Things are still crazy in the world but one of the safest places to relax and enjoy yourself is in the outdoors.”

It had been a long time since Seth Feider was blasting instead of casting. “One positive to no derbies this spring is that I got to turkey hunt — haven't been in 15 years but always did enjoy it!” he said. How about one more big bass before we shut this down? Randy Sullivan offers this healthy fish that would have most every Elite jealous and raring to go. “I decided to quarantine myself on the lake!” Good decision. Soon, it’s hoped, soon, the Elites will be back in action.

Let’s close things with a Z, as in Chris Zaldain. The layoff allowed him and wife, Trait, to get more done moving into a new home. Zaldain even had time to do some landscaping, hashtagging SheWantedPink, for her plant choices. Fun fishing, and family time aside, it’s no doubt all the Elites will be tickled pink to get back to competitions. B.A.S.S. is hard at work trying to reschedule events once society reopens, and everyone can hardly wait until pro anglers are seen in their natural environs.
