Davy Hite: Angler of the Year

It was a brutally hot morning on Lake Eufaula, but Davy Hite hardly seemed to notice. The 2001-02 CITGO BASSMASTER Tour was winding down, and the personable South Carolina pro was putting the finishing touches on perhaps his most satisfying career achievement.

Heavy cover

To humans, hollow pieces of plastic vaguely resemble squid, but come in colors that Jacques Cousteau never imagined in his undersea adventures. However, these colorful bits of plastic ring dinner bells in bass brains as they slip through brushy cover.

Get wet for bass

Many anglers mistakenly believe wading is strictly a spring fling for bass fishermen.

Fishin’ the slop

Water covered with a thick carpet of vegetation represents bass fishing's ultimate approach/avoidance conflict.

The Dean of finesse bed fishing

Texas immigrant Dean Rojas wields heavy tackle whenever bedding bass will tolerate it, as they did when he caught a Bassmaster record of 108 pounds, 12 ounces in 2001 at Florida's Lake Toho. His primary outfit there was a flippin' rod and 25-pound Izorline.

Federation Youth – Four more years, then and now

This election year, just as those before it, I found myself reflecting on the last four years. That's not uncommon. I believe most of us found ourselves in the same boat. Another four years and "still" chasing that elusive 12-pound bass and, oh, yeah, another presidential race.
