Bob Sealy, CEO and creator the Big Bass Splash fishing tournaments, died early Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 75.
The big-smiling Texan from Jasper loved bass fishing and spent decades bringing it to the masses. In 2017, he was inducted into the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame.
In the early 1980s, Sealy began competing in Bassmaster tournaments, never faring too well. Admiring the B.A.S.S. organization, Sealy convinced founder Ray Scott to bring the Bassmasters to Sam Rayburn Reservoir.
Knowing he couldn’t compete with B.A.S.S., Sealy devised a tournament format “Where amateurs could win like the pros.” His events drew thousands hoping to cash in on hourly prizes or take home a life-changing payout.
The Big Bass Splash, in its 40th year, has paid out more than $30 million while raising millions to support Ronald McDonald House Charities and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
As emcee, Sealy was famous for his calls, engaging young and old alike, and the catchphrase, “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
“Great memories of a truly unique and great man,” said Mike McKinnis, vice president of B.A.S.S. TV production arm, JM Associates. “JM was fortunate to have worked with Bob.”
The Big Bass Splash website posted this Wednesday:
“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved founder, Mr. Bob Sealy. A father, grandfather, and a friend to all, Bob was passionate about delivering the very best to anglers and touched countless lives through his decades of unwavering dedication and visionary leadership.
“His legacy and spirit will forever be deeply etched in our hearts and continue to be our guiding light. Bob’s contributions have left an indelible mark on our lives. He was more than a business leader; he was a mentor and a beacon of how to love and serve others. Bob faced his battle with cancer with remarkable strength and courage.
