Several companies offer swim jigs that have the word “finesse” in their name. Since most of them weigh from 1/4- to 3/8-ounce, common sizes for swim jigs in general, it is their smaller profile that puts them in the finesse category.
Their reduced size is typically achieved via the jig’s head design, hook size and by dressing the bait with a sparser skirt. You complete the finesse appearance by fixing a small trailer to the hook. Many things can put bass off and make them more susceptible to a finesse swim jig, such as heavy fishing pressure or a change in the weather. However, a downsized swim jig is most effective when the bass are dialed in to small baitfish. This is typically the case on tidal rivers, but you can run into this phenomenon anywhere.
