Just north of Saginaw Bay, the legends and lore of the Alpena Shipwreck Museum and Tours offers exciting tales of Lake Huron. Then you can create your own tales on the lake. As with many other areas of the Great Lakes, gobies have caused the smallmouth bass in the bay to pack on weight. They average 2 to 3 pounds with some reaching 6 pounds or more. Saginaw Bay’s weedy shoreline areas also hold many 2- to 3-pound largemouth bass with some topping 5 pounds.
Hammer shallow smallmouth in springtime with jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and lipless rattling crankbaits. Or, target largemouth in the many canals around the bay. Pitching soft plastics to seawalls is hard to beat. Some largemouth bass remain in the canals throughout the summer. Others scatter out to the weed flats of the inner bay.
For summer smallies, ply deeper dropoffs, reefs and rockpiles with tubes and drop shot rigs. You’ll catch the biggest bronzebacks from rocky, current-swept bottoms around the Charity Islands.
