The B.A.S.S. Family lost a great man today. Louis “Pee Wee” Powers, passed away today in Virginia surrounded by his family. Pee Wee was a former state president of the Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation back in the 80’s. He did such a great job serving as the volunteer coordinator at three consecutive Bassmaster Classics on the James River (1988-1990) that Dewey Kendrick hired him as part of the tournament crew. He retired from Reynolds (the aluminum foil folks) and went to work for B.A.S.S.
He was a staple on the tournament crew and touched a lot of lives along the way. It’s hard to come up with a time when he wasn’t kind and gentle, and he was always teaching. He was always positive and always found the good in people.
He stayed working on the tournament crew until 2011 when he had some heart issues and was given a heart pump, and could not go on the road any longer. Not that he didn’t want to, or was not physically able to, he just couldn’t get medical clearance, or you can bet he would’ve been right there with the rest of the B.A.S.S. family.
Pee Wee was part of a lot of B.A.S.S. history, but the one everyone will recognize is the iconic photo of Fish Fishburne, Dean Rojas and him holding Dean’s five bass limit of 45-2!
I know that I am a better man for having Pee Wee in my life. I learned a lot from that man. Too many life lessons to count. He was like a second father to me. I know there are countless folks out there that feel the same way.
