CLARKSVILLE, Va. — Maryland’s Andrew Sams and Chris Avarella of New Jersey earned berths to the Junior Bassmaster World Championship on Sept. 13, while Maryland’s Logan Kuhrmann and Ryan Werley of Pennsylvania moved on to the CastingKids National Championship.

Both championships will be held in November in conjunction with the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation National Championship in Kansas.

Sams and Avarella each caught their keepers early in the day, spending the rest of the day releasing short fish.

“You’ve got to keep thinking it’s going to happen soon enough,” Averalla said, explaining how he kept his concentration. “You’ve just got to stay with it because (a big bite) can come when you least expect it.”

In the CastingKids regional, Kuhrmann put together 140 out of 150 possible points to easily win the 7- to 10-year-old division.

Werley, on the other hand, had to weather two sudden-death castoffs after he and three other competitors (Maryland’s Johnny Duarte, Virginia’s Ryan Bush and West Virginia’s Taylor Sias) logged 130 points.

Duarte and Bush fell out of competition after the first castoff. Sias and Werley hit the 40-point ring, but Sias stumbled and missed the target during the second castoff.

Werely sealed his victory by placing his lure on the 40-point ring.
