Gear Review: St. Croix Mojo Bass Spin

What is it?

St. Croix Mojo Bass Spin

What sets it apart?

When Bassmaster Elite pro Jesse Wiggins told St. Croix Director of Engineering Jason Brunner he needed a spinning rod with a 7-foot, 3-inch, medium-power butt section and medium-heavy tip section, the Park Falls, Wisc., rod maker said “you got it.” A renowned shaky head technician, Wiggins’ found his inspiration for, and testing of, the Mojo Bass Power Shake on the Tennessee River ledges. The result was a spinning rod well suited for making lengthy casts, fishing deep water and picking up slack — all with a price tag that won’t break your budget.

How do I use it?

With models from 6-10 to 7-6, St. Croix’s Mojo Bass rods are made of premium, high-modulus SCIII graphite and built with Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) tooling technology. Each rod comes with a 5-year warranty backed by St. Croix Superstar Service.

Angler’s insight:

Slinging hefty shaky heads like the ones Wiggins is known for takes more rod than your garden variety spinner. Launching the bait long enough to cover enough water is one part, but you also want to make sure your casts are hitting the target zone. Looks like St. Croix got the right input on this one and built a rod that’ll allow anglers to beef up their shaky head game with a rod that’s sensitive enough to “read” the bottom and detect light bites, while providing plenty of power for setting the hook at the end of a lengthy toss.
