Gear Review: St. Croix Mojo Bass Carbon Cranker

What is it?

St. Croix Mojo Bass Carbon Cranker

What sets it apart?

While fiberglass crankbait rods offer slower, moderate actions that benefit casting and hook sets, carbon fiber (graphite) rods offer a lighter, more sensitive option that reduces fatigue and does a better job of transmitting that essential “feel” for what a bait is impacting. St. Croix’s renowned rod-building methods have produced several carbon cranking rods in its high-end Legend Tournament series, but the new 7-foot, 1-inch Mojo Bass Carbon Cranker rods offer an impressive blend of attributes at a significantly lower price.

How do I use it?

Made with premium, high-modulus SCIII carbon and Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) mandrel technology, these moderate action rods are offered in medium power for accurately casting small- to medium-sized crankbaits and a medium-heavy model with sufficient power for handling bigger baits up to an ounce. Features include Kigan Master Hand 3D guides with slim, strong aluminum-oxide rings and black frames, Fuji ECS reel seat with black hood, Split-grip/premium-grade cork handle and Kigan hook keeper.

How Much?

$150

Angler’s insight:

It’s hard to imagine a body of water where crankbaits, in some form, are not relevant. That means any serious bass angler needs at least one rod designed for the requisite action. St. Croix made a good move by creating a series of rods that highlight the characteristics of carbon — light weight, durability and sensitivity — at a price that still allows room in the budget to buy more crankbaits; because anglers can never have too many.
