Gear Review: Landum Outdoors Trapper Hook

What is it?

Landum Outdoors Trapper Hook

What sets it apart?

This is pure problem-solving tackle development. Traditional J-hook style catches plenty of fish, but the semi-round to round bend creates a pivot point that allows a hook to move and expand the entry hole to the point of escape. Bait slippage further plagues the J style.

Trapper hooks fix both issues with a pair of right angles at the base of the shank. This “Trapper Box” ensures a solid hook placement, prevents rocking motion and lessens the chance of a fish shaking free. Also, this unique design holds soft plastics in place by presenting a more complex form that resists slipping.

How do I use it?

Trapper Hooks come in five families with multiple sizes and wire gauges offering 19 unique hooks. Options include a Heavy Cover Super Wide Gap hook (XXX Heavy Gauge), two Offset Wide Gap hooks (Standard and X Heavy Gauge), and a 30-Degree Jig Hook (X Heavy Gauge) that enables DIY anglers and jig designers to include a Trapper Box in their baits. For finesse soft plastics, a standard gauge Dropshot/Live Bait/Finesse hook comes in sizes #4 to 2/0.

How much?

Angler’s insight:

I’m liking this design for a number of presentations from nose-hooking a light drop shot worm, to pitching unweighted Senkos into tules or bulrush to long casting a fluke along grass lines. Whether it’s a delicate finesse presentation, an occasional tail-nipper or a forceful cast, it’s good to know there’s an option for keeping all plastics where they should be — and keeping bass buttoned up when they make a mistake.
