Gear Review: AFTCO Mirage

What is it?

AFTCO Mirage

What sets it apart?

Made of 100 percent Polyester Cation Yarn, AFTCO’s Mirage Softshell jacket features 5k waterproofing and 3k breathability that’ll keep you warm and dry on those cool morning runs. Made for an active fit, the jacket allows plenty of room for layering with a hooded sweatshirt, while DWR finish + Teflon™ finish help repel stains. For enhanced safety, reflective AFTCO logos keep you visible in low light.

How do I use it?

The chest pocket features a low-profile zipper track that’s welded to prevent water intrusion. Also, with the pocket’s interior reaching lower than the opening, cellphones and other valuables are less likely to escape. With sizes S-2XL, the Mirage comes in black or sublimated camo print over heather ground. The latter’s subtle design resembles a shadowy water surface and might prove helpful in breaking up our profile when targeting skittish bass.

How much?

$129

Angler’s insight:

One thing I particularly like here is the lack of a hood. It’s either hood weather or it’s not, and when it’s not necessary, a hood can be burdensome. Often, light to mid-weight jackets include hoods that are rarely used and only take up space. Not necessarily a day-wrecker, but it is nice to have an option. I see the Mirage as a good medium-weight jacket with convenient packable form for kayakers, while also convenient for boat storage. Moreover, since it doesn’t carry that traditional “rainwear” look, the Mirage can easily pull double duty in your casual wardrobe.
