Gear Review: AFTCO Hydronaut

What is it?

AFTCO Hydronaught

What sets it apart?

Combining toughness, durability and comfort, the Hydronaut Jacket and Bibs were designed to handle the really wet, nasty stuff that tests your resolve. Both are made with a 20K 100 percent waterproof 2-layer nylon shell with a 100 percent polyester mesh lining. Charcoal gray in color, the jacket’s distinguishing features include a SpeedVent Airflow hood, double articulated storm flap, covered chest pockets, top entry pouch pockets, retractable d-rings and elasticated rear buckle waist cinch.

How do I use it?

Carrying over several of the Jacket’s leading features, the Bibs’ design includes knee-high side zips for easy on/off with double storm flap and Velcro cinching to keep the cold and wet stuff on the outside. Other key features include adjustable Velcro shoulders, ComfortFlex mesh back, brushed tricot hand warmer pockets, cargo pocket, Cordura lined pliers pocket, retractable d-rings, elasticated rear buckle waist cinch, Cordura articulated knees and rear brushed tricot interior match. Available in sizes S – XXXL.

How much?

Jacket $249, Bib $229

Angler’s insight:

It’s evident that AFTCO sought, received and integrated angler input for these designs, which address common needs of serious fishermen, while offering a savvy surprise in the form of a Cyclops integrated camera mount pocket that eliminates the need for a chest strap. Speaking of tools, the Cordura reinforced pliers pockets add a nice element of fisherman-friendly functionality. Also, considering the kind of weather for which the Hydronaught jacket and bib were created, the tricot hand warmer pockets and rubberized internal sleeve cuffs are thoughtful details that help define dependable foul weather gear.
