Gear Review: Thorne Bros Stealth Spinning Rod

WHAT IS IT?

Thorne Brothers Stealth Spinning Rod 7-foot, 10-inch MLXF

WHAT SETS IT APART?

The 7-foot, 10-inch MLXF is tailored specifically for throwing a light marabou hair jig, light drop shot or small swimbait. For my purposes, I have found it to excel specifically in throwing a hair jig. The 7-foot, 10-inch gives the extra length to cast super light hair jigs, and the extra fast tip lets the rod load up to whip the lightweight bait out there.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Long spinning rods are rare and may take some getting used to. It may take some time to acclimate yourself to using such a long rod if you aren’t already used to it. Once you get the hang of it, this rod is killer for throwing light baits a long way.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

By far my favorite technique for catching shallow smallmouth is with a hair jig. This rod is money for that technique for several reasons. First is the long handle: This rod has custom Winn Grips and a long butt section that allows plenty of leverage for making long casts. In addition, the medium light power and extra-fast tip give the rod enough power for wrangling big smallmouth but a soft enough tip as to not pull the bait away when they nip at your bait.

I can see this also being an effective spybait rod and small swimbait rod. That tip and the length will allow for ultra long casts which can be crucial in clear water or when fishing for schooling fish.

A tip I learned when throwing light baits like a hair jig is to tie a shorter fluorocarbon leader than what you normally would. Short enough that the knot doesn’t go into the spool. This will increase your casting distance and reduce the fray around your knot. With a long rod like this one, you will still have plenty of leader as to not spook line-shy bass.
