Gear Review: Shimano Vanford A

WHAT IS IT?

Shimano Vanford A

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Winner of the Best Freshwater Reel award at ICAST 2024, the Shimano Vanford A caters to finesse fishing efforts with a refined gear design. A key element of the Magnumlite series, InfinityXross technology improves winding efficiency to facilitate delicate presentations and precise lure manipulations. Also, Shimano’s Infinity Drive technology minimizes contact between the spool shaft and pinion gear for a smooth, efficient retrieve, while the bail arm’s Anti-Twist Fin plays a key line management role.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Shimano’s MagnumLite series espouses the strategic design elements of weight reduction, minimal start-up inertia and enhanced sensitivity. Designed for finesse anglers, the new Vanford A carries forth these principles with the addition of Shimano’s latest technologies. The result is a precision-tuned reel ideally suited for start-and-stop techniques and quick hook sets common to many of the light-line strategies often necessary to tempt bites on pressured fisheries. For example, the MGL Rotor combined with a rigid, lightweight CI4+ carbon-infused body enables immediate reel action and total bait control.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Light-line finesse tactics certainly play into the forward-facing sonar template, but while digital displays offer valuable insight, these techniques rely greatly on feel. Lightly wiggling a drop shot, Ned rig or shaky head or twitching a small swimbait requires a significant amount of focused energy. Not that heavy-rod, power-fishing techniques are not demanding, but long hours of precise movements with small baits can prove subtly challenging. Shimano’s new Vanford A was designed to help minimize fatigue and keep your presentations sharp.
