Gear Review: Northland Tackle Minnesota Mullet

WHAT IS IT?

Northland Tackle Minnesota Mullet Jig

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Mullet-style skirt made with synthetic materials that create a slower fall rate with a more lifelike hovering action, compared to other hair jigs. A razor-sharp Gamakatsu hook for handling big bass and hard-fighting fish, with detailed 3-D realistic eyes also set it apart. Chicken feathers undulate like a trailer, and just the right amount of tinsel completes the uncanny strike appeal of the entire package. Available in weight and hook sizes 3/8 (4/0), 1/2 (5/0), 5/8 (5/0), 3/4 (5/0). Six realistic color schemes for added strike appeal.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Big bass like big meals, and the larger profile of the Minnesota Mullet make it ideal for the job. That said, the fall season is prime time for this jig when big bass are searching for suspended baitfish and bluegill. Using a retrieve, pause and pull rotation keeps the jig suspended while imparting the realistic action of a swimming baitfish. Fish it over cover like weedbeds, rockpiles and wherever baitfish suspend.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

The Minnesota Mullet is a game changer with its synthetic hair that adds buoyancy to the jig — a huge benefit when bait and bass are in deeper water. You can use the heavier sizes to reach those strike zones while keeping the bait from falling too quickly out of the desired depth range. It will be my go-to hair jig in fall when a different look gets strikes for pressured late-season bass.
