Gear Review: Berkley Krej

WHAT IS IT?

Berkley Krej

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Berkley took a word common to the world of forward-facing sonar and turned it 180. Cleverly, “jerk,” as in jerkbait, spelled backwards gives us Krej — the name of its innovative bait designed to play on the predatory instincts of hungry bass. Built with an upturned bill that brings the bait progressively higher in the water column on the retrieve, the sinking Krej allows the angler to probe the depths or target specific fish spotted on the electronics. Available in 10 colors.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Measuring 4 inches and weighing 1/2 ounce, Berkley’s new bait mimics the natural upward fleeing reaction that baitfish typically display when predators approach. We all love to find ‘em schooling, and when the chewing starts, most baitfish try to move up and away — that’s why we often see baitfish leaping out of the water. Created to allow the angler maximum control, this bait spends more time in the strike zone.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

When you pause the retrieve, the Krej drops backward toward the fish. This unexpectedly bold move typically triggers a bite from bass not accustomed to seeing forage get all up in their grill. This exemplifies the revealing nature of forward-facing sonar — finding fish is one thing, but bites often require specific strategies. Spotting fish rising to give chase should trigger the evasive maneuvers, but when the fish prove indecisive, the run-pause-run cadence might push one over the edge.
