On the hunt with Hackney and Feider

Follow along with Greg Hackney and Seth Feider as they hunt for big fish in the stumps and docks of Lake Fork.

Greg Hackney, who began Day 2 of the 2022 Simms Bassmaster Elite at Lake Fork in fourth, ran back into a stump-filled creek early this morning.
He caught two bass before we caught up with him. The pair of bass combned for just less than 4 pounds.
The Louisiana pro was working stumps on the edge of a flooded creek channel.
He was fishing in thick cover, and he periodically snagged up.
The area he fished was choked with wooden cover, but he focused his attention on those stumps within a few yards of the flooded creek channel.
One of his main baits was a square-bill crankbait, which he bounced off the cover.
However, he had plenty of tools within reach.
The wood cover necessitated retying lures.
Hackney was serious as he contemplated his next move.
After about an hour, he headed out to look for other waters. “Next!” he said.
Moving, however, meant idling through the minefield of stumps to reach the main boat lane.
High winds had Lake Fork angry, and the anglers paid the price. Here, Texas’ Keith Combs powers across gut-busting waves as he moves spots.
We slide over to 2021 Angler of the Year Seth Feider, who had moved into the Top 12 on the strength of a 17-pound-plus morning. However, he had not caught a bass after 9:30 a.m. and by the afternoon had tumbled in the standings.
Feider was working a stretch of bank just out of the wind that included a scant four docks.
He flipped the docks thoroughly, swimming a jig through the wooden supports.
Between docks, Feider would throw a topwater in hopes of tempting a bass feeding in the grassy shallows.
He managed one small fish, but it wasn’t long enough to make the cut.
After working each dock in turn, Feider pulled up his trolling motor …
… and idled back to the first dock to start the rotation again.
