The fishing has been steady right out of the gate this morning. In the first 35 minutes, while some anglers were still running to their starting spots, seven bass over 3 pounds were boated and registered into BassTrakk.
Talking to Chris Zaldain and Austin Felix during practice, it sounded like a heavy three was going to be the breaking point between a solid limit filler and a fish you’d just have to cull later in the day if you were to do any good. Felix believed it would take 18 pounds a day just to be in the Top 50 after Day 2. That’s better than a 3- and 1/2- pound average. But he also said 20 pounds per day should win.
Reading between the lines a little, there are a lot of solid bass close to 4 pounds right now, but there aren’t many 5-pounders swimming around, and we’re talking about needing to catch 20 good fish in that tight range to make a run at this. A 4-pounder will be cause for celebration on Champlain.
