What isn’t in play?

Davis gave us a smile when we pulled up to him about midday. "I just lost a giant," he said, as he re-rigged.

On Day 1 alone of the Gamakatsu Bassmaster Elite at Lake Seminole, we saw anglers sight fishing, blind bed fishing, casting baits like vibrating jigs for pre-spawners, casting baits like swim jigs for spawners and using forward facing sonar out deep for pre- and post- spawn fish. Even the shad spawn was brought up by Mike Iaconelli. There’s be a little bit of a whole lot of things going on.

The latest bait to come to our attention, the spinnerbait, played a big role on Day 1 apparently. Will Davis Jr caught a few of his keeper fish, including one close to 7-pounds, fishing a spinnerbait through and around hydrilla near the mouth of a spawning cove in the Flint River. He returned to that spot this morning but found nothing there. He’ll surely return later in the day to try again. But judging by the slow start of the Day 1 leaders, it’s going to be really hard to be consistent with so much going on. Of the 5 guys that had over 20 pounds on Day 1, Drew Benton has the most so far with two fish for 3 pounds, 12 ounces. A slow go this morning as the anglers scramble to relocate these bass that are on the move.
