“This is how we’re going to catch biggun’s,” said Kyle Welcher. “We just have to be patient.”
That’s what I expected to hear from Welcher today, but a little earlier this morning when we rolled the dice on the morning herring bite after taking off in boat 98, the former professional poker player looked at me and said, “I don’t have the patience for this. It’s too high risk.”
“Wait! What? I thought your poker background would have given you the patience you need to wait out the herring all day,” I asked.
“I can be patient with something I have confidence in. I don’t have confidence in this,” explained Welcher, which makes sense when you process it. Poker is a high risk, high reward endeavor, much like chasing schooling bass.
For this Marshal, having never ventured beyond a game of Uno or Old Maid probably offers more insight in to why I don’t like chasing schooling bass which is a necessary evil out here among the best anglers on the planet.
Welcher boated his first keeper with a more finesse presentation for which he shared he has lots of confidence in and feels like that’s how he can assemble a bigger bag today.
Certainly a gamble he’s willing to make.
