Perennial favorites here, Chris and Cory Johnston aren’t disappointing this morning. The two currently sit well inside the top 10 with close to 20-pounds apiece. We just watched Chris put his 5th fish in the boat and make the comment, “Now we can start looking.”
With a solid limit in the boat, now Chris feels comfortable running around in search of bigger fish. Most of the guys fishing the lake are still somewhat in practice mode here on Day 1, since the official practice window of Sunday through Tuesday saw primarily unfavorable conditions for heading out on the big water.
Though there were short windows of calm amongst the storms during practice, a few hours here and there are hardly sufficient for breaking down the more than 7,000 square miles of available water on Lake Ontario. Realistically, time and fuel constraints make only a fraction of that surface area accessible to anglers, but there’s still a lot of water to digest.
We’ll likely start to see several anglers go back to “looking” as they slowly feel their wells with 18- to 20- pound starter limits. Want to know how good this place is? Any smallmouth under 4-pounds almost has to be culled to have a shot here. That’s crazy good.
