The century mark

The top 10 have all surpassed the 20-pound mark as we make our way past the midday point here on Day 1. Marc Frazier currently sits in 15th with 20-pounds even while Jay Przekurat and Cory Johnston sit atop the heap with 25-ish apiece.

It stands to reason that there are a few more 20-pound bags already in the boat for anglers who are either in bad service areas or are lowballing their guesstimates, which many are a threat to do.

The more interesting number though is that one at the top of the leaderboard, 25-6. We’re all hoping to see history happen here this week as someone amasses more than 100-pounds of smallmouth. No one in Elite Series history has entered the Century Club before with all bronze backs. It would be an impressive feat for sure.

With 28-pounds being the reasonable upper echelon of what we’ll likely see a five fish limit weigh here, there are at least five anglers with over 23-pounds today already on a pretty good pace to hit 100-pounds. You could theoretically get there a lot of ways, but a scenario with daily weights like 27, 23, 25 and 25 is more likely to be the path.

It’s really hard to consistently catch 25 a day here across four days, for a multitude of reasons. But the biggest one is that Lake Ontario is rarely fishable four days in a row. This means anglers often have to resort to fishing in the river at least one day in a tournament like this and that historically means a smaller bag on average for that day.

But with very favorable wind forecasts here this week, we may have the perfect storm a brewing, figuratively speaking of course. There’s a good chance anglers will be able to venture out onto the lake all four days this week, and that could mean a hundred pounds plus for multiple anglers.
