You could wrap up my personal knowledge of northern/Great Lake smallmouth fishing and slip it in your pocket like a couple pennies, so I’ll spare you my two cents. But I will tell you what I’ve learned vicariously this week; when the sun is shining and the water is (relatively) calm, them smallmouth go to biting.
We’ve heard it all week from anglers and commentators alike, smallmouth are visual feeders. The less wind (though you do want a little) and the clearer the skies, the better. The sun in the open sky penetrates the slick water’s surface, unimpeded by clouds and waves. This creates the best chance for a smallmouth to be able to see its prey and chase it down.
These are the conditions of Championship Sunday. A slight chance of rain this evening, but mostly clear and winds 5 to 10. A recipe for another whackfest.
