Slow morning bite

The water is stagnant out on Lay Lake this morning, and so is the fishing. There’s only one generator operating at Logan Martin Dam and Lay Dam, where two to three are needed to really get things going. With minimal current generation on the Coose comes tough fishing and minimal fish catches. Thus far, only five bass have been caught by our Top 10 anglers combined.

Will Davis Jr and Matt Herren, who have spent half their time or more within sight of the Logan Martin Dam, haven’t even ventured up there yet. The water isn’t deep enough below the dam to access some of the places they’ve been fishing, not until more current is being generated. And even if they could get to those holes, the fish don’t position the same in the slack current. So, the two have resorted to fishing grass and docks like the majority of the rest of the field.

That bite has been relatively dead too, however, with Brandon Palaniuk, Jason Christie, Brandon Cobb, Seth Feider, Matt Heren, and Justin Hamner still scoreless. The anglers who have had a little success are Patrick Walters and Jay Pzekurat, doing something different. Walters has been fishing a jerkbait a lot this week, targeting suspended fish. We’ve seen Hamner do this as well, though he’s on the grass lines this morning. And the moping technique is working for Pzekurat, with two for 5-1.

**While writing this, Palaniuk and Cobb have both boated a keeper. BP’s was a nice 2- and ½- pound chunk. Cobb’s fish was a line burner, at an estimated 12 ounces.
