Bernie Shultz and Drew Cook have both busted the big bags we’ve been looking for. Shultz started the day in 44th, while Cook sat in 38th. The former now sits in 3rd, as Cook moves into 5th.
Like Day 2 leader Drew Benton, Drew Cook and Bernie Shultz are both phenomenal sight fishermen. Yesterday’s assumption, based on weather forecasts and dock talk, was that the bed fishing bite would fade today. The general consensus among the anglers and especially the locals was that most of the bass had already bedded. And the rough weather forecast for today was supposed to put a damper on whatever sight fishing bite had lingered thus far.
But, John Cox and Drew Benton have both continued to find and pluck solid fish off bed. And though we don’t know for certain yet, it’s at least highly likely that one, if not both of today’s hard chargers have sight-fished up the leaderboard.
As far as the bed bite looks moving forward, John Cox just posed a question and made a comment on Bassmaster LIVE.
“Do we stop on one that weighs 4 pounds or do we wait til we find a 5 or 6? It’s really tough.”
Tough is a very relative term. As weather forecasts go, the low is predicted to plummet into the low 40s tonight, after hovering around 60 last night. This won’t likely be enough to discourage the bedders from staying shallow. And tomorrow’s outlook of sunny and 77 with a 5 to 10-mile per-hour wind out of the West sets up a picture perfect for the Drew crew and others to pose serious threats sight fishing.
