Tyler Rivet is the wild card we thought we might see on Okeechobee this week– an angler using forward-facing sonar to catch his fish. Rivet sat in third after day one with 24-5. And it’s fairly safe to say at this point that he caught the majority of his day one weight looking at the fish on his graph.
Though we saw Scott Martin scanning the shallows with his forward-facing sonar as well yesterday, that’s not really what most of us associate with the new technology– catching suspended fish.
Rivet made the comment on Bassmaster LIVE after fishing only a few minutes up the Kissimmee River, “I should have 20- pounds by now.” Though that might have sounded like a cheeky exaggeration, B.A.S.S. photog Andy Crawford reported from the water that Rivet meant what he said.
“It’s weird. You catch one or two and you have to move ’cause they won’t eat,” said Rivet, who has only one small keeper in the boat so far.
Rivet sees the fish on his graph again this morning, and they are big. But they’re not willing to bite his jerkbait… yet.
