Shad are flickering and the fog has lifted some as Brandon Palaniuk fishes his way through his primary area to start Day 3.
Palaniuk leads the tournament with 35-12 after two days and has largely had his area to himself the past two days.
Palaniuk has been surprised that he has found the quality and quantity of bass he has this week at Lay. Each day, he’s been unsure if he would catch more than 6 pounds.
So far this morning, he has landed two keepers and a non-keeper, but he has had a couple of swings and misses as well.
With so much grass around, it would be easy for anglers to get drawn into fishing that exclusively. Palaniuk has fished a little grass this morning, but he has mostly been targeting cover off the bank.
“You have to make repeated casts and drag it along,” he said.
Palaniuk likes to have a longer leader when dragging his drop shot in shallow water to make sure the bait itself isn’t dragging on the bottom.
