Making the cut

What’s it going to take to make the cut? That’s the thought running through the minds of 20- to 30- guys around the bubble right now. Making the top 47 cut means fishing on Day 3. After Day 1, David Mullins held that coveted 47th place spot with 13-12. Traditionally, you can double the weight and add a little to try to figure what it’ll take for two days, as these anglers put their foot on the gas on Day 2 and get more dialed in. But, sometimes Day 2 is tougher than Day 1. Currently according to BassTrakk, 47th place is Patrick Walters with 21-3.

Most of these guys are a little conservative on their guesstimates, so the current cut is likely around 22- to 23- pounds. And that will surely rise throughout the remaining 3- to 4- hours of competition, depending on what flight the anglers are in. Doing the old double the weight and add a little trick may be too much today. Let’s just say around 27- pounds after two days will get an angler into Day 3. For a hard number, we’ll go with 27- pounds, 2- ounces. A little less than twice what we saw on Day 1.

But I guarantee you one thing, none of the anglers will feel confident with less than 29- pounds. They know how good their competitors are. But it’s been a tough day and the current doesn’t appear to be increasing to the levels it did on Day 1. There will be some guys who come off the water not thinking they have a chance of making it to Day 3, who end up sweating it out and make it in.
