The herring bite on a place like Lake Murray can be extremely frustrating for any angler, even the locals. On grass lakes, like Okeechobee, you can go straight back to particular grass mat and all but count on fish being there. Up a muddy creek, there’s a good chance to run to a stretch of docks or laydowns and get bit time and time again. But with herring fisheries, it’s all a crapshoot.
Blueback herring are a nomadic baitfish, meaning they are always on the move. Knowing there are places where these herring will collect at times, is beneficial. But it’s not a perfect science.
South Carolina natives Shane LeHew and Bryan New both have a lot of experience on Murray. And they both have spent countless hours fishing herring lakes. And they’re both struggling this morning. LeHew has seen more action, and but for bad luck he’d be sitting a little better on BassTrakk than he is right now in 39th place. New just boated his first keeper of the day, having zeroed the first 3 hours of this event on his home lake. Clark Wendlandt also has a ton of experience here. He’s in 76th with one fish for 2-10.
