Lester off to great start

Leaving his starting spot with presumably his entire Day 1 weight of 21-6 at around 8 o’clock yesterday morning, Brandon Lester has no doubt been chomping at the bit to get back to that honey hole on Day 2. We saw him start there right away this morning and quickly put his first fish in the boat, a 5-pounder that had his crankbait choked. He’s since rotated back and forth between the crankbait and a jig and added another small keeper and a 3-pounder.

B.A.S.S. photographer Andy Crawford is covering Lester this morning and his close proximity to the action has given us a little more context as to what he’s doing. It looks to Crawford that Lester is likely sitting in about 10- feet of water, casting up onto a shallow bar, perhaps picking a little vegetation off his crankbait between casts.

And it looked like, according to the images coming through on Bassmaster LIVE, that the crankbait Lester is throwing is a large squarebill, one of the newer models that can dive down a little deeper.

It’s a one cast deal, according to Crawford. Lester is making the same cast over and over, swapping baits every few minutes. With a good one and a solid one in the boat early, Lester is well on his way to a repeat performance here on Day 2.
