Bryan Schmitt just boated his second 4-pounder, and he’s mad at the moment— mad because he just lost two more this size. Schmitt has 18 pounds, 2 ounces in the boat, all smallmouth. When he won here two years ago, he had a mixed bag of smallmouth and largemouth. He has a largemouth pattern going again that he found in practice, but he hasn’t yet checked it today.
Who can blame him, he’s catching fish about as fast as humanly possible this morning, and sitting in 3rd on BassTrakk. His hope is to leave the largemouth alone for as long as possible, to save them for later in the event. His smallmouth plan seems to be working well enough at the moment that he’ll be able to do that.
