Mike Iaconelli is the first to post more than 20 pounds to BassTrakk, with a 6- pounder and two bass weighing 4 pounds apiece already.
At only 29 years of age, Iaconelli won a Bassmaster Tour event here in 2002. The event, held in February, featured a tough bite. Ike had only 55 pounds, 2 ounces, and won by more than 5 pounds. At the time, Ike was “cranking cover-laden ledges in the Flint River.”
BASS photographer Dalton Tumblin is on Ike this morning and reported the following:
“There’s a small patch of sawgrass coming out of the water, no bigger than the size of a bass boat itself. It has a lot of lily pad stems surrounding it. He keeps circling around it fishing all sides of it. He’s mainly throwing a bladed jig. Really small spot, but it’s loaded up. The fish are hanging out around it in the lily pad stems.”
Will Ike be able to repeat here some 21 years later? It’ll take what he already has an more all four days to get it done. But he’s off to a great start.
