Hudnall’s ‘dirt shallow’ pattern

A submerged roadbed lined with standing timber, and described by Derek Hudnall as “dirt shallow,” is keeping him hanging on inside the cut.

Hudnall is throwing a bladed jig into the strike zone, which is where the trees mix with the roadbed.

Andy Crawford took this picture of Hudnall reacting to having lost a second bass, both estimated at weighing 4 pounds apiece.

He told Andy by 9 a.m. that he’d caught 20 bass in the area, where he also observed gizzard shad activity.

“They stage in the nearby deep water, form wolf packs, and then charge in to feed and then retreat again.”

Hudnall plans to move back offshore, where he hopes to catch the bigger-sized fish he needs to compete on Championship Sunday.
