Gaston off to a good start

David Gaston is the first local to land a heavy blow. We have a LIVE camera with him this morning. He appeared to have run straight to a patch of grass where the shad were spawning and quickly proceeded to swim up a 4-pounder.

The swim jig is a bait you’ll see a lot here this week. One of the Coosa River staples, this bait mimics both shad and bluegill rally well in the grass that abounds here. All these anglers know this, and no doubt half the field started the day with a swim jig in hand.

The light is still low as of right now, so the shad spawn likely still lingers for the moment. Carl Jocumsen also has a 4-0 already. These are the kinds of bites that will be few and far between today and will really set anglers apart from the rest of the field.
