Frog fishing: fun and misery

Frog fishing is one of the most exciting ways to fish, and one of the most nerve wracking. It’s the epitome of high risk, high reward. You seldom get a lot of bites, but when you do they’re usually big, though getting the bass into the boat is the real battle.

In five minutes, Chris Johnston just showed us how much of a roller coaster this style of fishing can be. He hooked a big one for this fishery, likely 4- pounds plus, had it pinned for a couple turns of the handle and then his frog came flying back towards him.

He kept his composure, albeit with immense effort, and went right back to fishing. His perseverance paid off with another good bite just a few casts later. This time, the 3-pound-plus bass made it into the boat.

Johnston started the day with a near 2-pound lead over Keith Combs sitting in second. He caught a solid limit of smallmouth early, including a couple close to 3. This allowed him to swap over to a frog way earlier than he’s been able to all week. With time and weather conditions in his favor, Johnston has a good shot at walking away with this thing, if he can land more than he loses.
