Days like today are just plain fun

Fun, that’s the only word anglers have been able to come up with to describe what’s happening on the Mississippi River right now.

Professional bass fishing can be a rather stressful occupation. The stage shots with trophies and checks are mighty glamorous. But the 1,000-day grinds in between those highlights take their toll.

Days like today are just plain fun, and really needed from time to time. Matt Arey went punching this morning for the first time all week, catching 4 fish in 10 flips. “They get as shallow here as anywhere we ever go. It’s a trip, and a lot of fun.”

Bryan Schmitt went to reel his Carolina rig in so he could throw a topwater at schooling fish, but a 2- and 1/2- pound smallmouth snatched his rod down before he could get his bait to the boat. He boat flipped the nice chunk and then tossed it back knowing it wouldn’t even help. Schmitt’s 15-year old son has a birthday party coming up, or else he said he’d be staying on the Mississippi a few more days he’s having such a good time.
