The anglers are headed out onto Lake Okeechobee as we speak. Day one went as expected, with 11 bags over 20- pounds and the biggest surprise being Bernie Shultz ousting Scott Martin for the day 1 lead.
It’s no surprise that Shultz caught them, as he is a Florida native and famed sight-fisherman. The surprise was simply that he leap-frogged Martin who we all watched catch his 25- pounds, 11- ounces early in the day. Shultz was estimated to be several spots behind Martin throughout the day, but dumped 28-11 on the scales at weigh-in including the day one Phoenix Big Bass of 8-10.
Will Shultz be able to back it up on day two? Or will the local favorite Scott Martin be better better suited to duplicate his day one success? We’ll soon see. The conditions are again spectacular this morning on Lake Okeechobee with light winds out of the southwest to start the day and 88- degrees predicted as the high. Don’t be surprised if the weights today are even better than day one.
