There was a lot of concern amongst the anglers that Day 1 of the Minn Kota Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River would be postponed. We saw a postponement last week at Champlain due to wind and weather. The 20-plus mph winds forecasted for today had the Elite anglers anxiously awaiting the call. Tournament officials made the decision to let the anglers fish, and they are catching them this morning.
A few anglers opted to head all the way into Lake Ontario, where the wind is howling and the waves are big, like Drew Cook and Kyle Welcher who sit in 3rd and 1st in the Progressive Angler of the Year race. Brandon Cobb, who sits in 2nd just 6 points back of Kyle Welcher, chose to stay in the more protected St. Lawrence River. This decision is paying off for him. Cobb has caught three fish this morning, all over 4- and 1/2- pounds and is in 2nd on the day. Cook’s BassTrakk shows one fish for 2-12. Welcher hasn’t reported any catches yet.
