Championship Sunday has begun for the AFTCO Bassmaster Elite at Lake St. Clair. The Top 10 anglers left the dock at 7 am EDT. By 7:15 Taku Ito had taken the lead, with two smallmouth for an estimated 7 pounds, 0 ounces. Bryan Schmitt had caught one too, moving into 2nd with a 3-pounder. And Greg Hackney boated a 3-pounder as well to move into 4th. Half the Top 10 were likely still running at this time, so of the five with a rod in their hands, four fish were already in the livewell.
The fishing has been that fast and furious all week. With 10 LIVE cameras on the water with our leaders during Days 2 and 3, I’m not sure there was ever a lull of more than 1 minute when someone wasn’t hooked up. Most of the time, the production team would just swap from one fish catch to the next, to the next, to the next. In the 5 minutes, it took to scribble these notes, 3 more bass over 3 pounds hit BassTrakk. The fishing may be as good in a couple of places as it is on St. Clair, but nowhere is it better.
