I’m no cowboy. So I’ll admit, I don’t know all that much about cowboy things. And I’ve already woven together a half dozen cliches to stretch more than one metaphor to the breaking point. But at least I haven’t thrown out, “There’s a new sheriff in town.” Yet…
I did a little research into bull riding. And apparently, 8 seconds is the minimum and the maximum time allowed for a bull rider to be on a bull and receive a score. Anglers are allowed roughly 8 hours during a derby day, with their totals tallied at the end as well.
Joey Cifuentes, aka The Cowboy has been on the back of a bucking bull four times this week. He’s made it 8 seconds on the first three rides, posting some impressive scores. He’s barebacking another at the moment with 2.25 seconds left and his best score thus far in the works. Day 1 saw 22-10, Day 2 another 24-0 and on Day 3, Cifuentes posted 21-1. Each day, his estimates on BassTrakk have been close, a little low at times. Today, he’s already at 23-10, with one bass left in his bag under 4 pounds.
Other anglers are riding their bulls too, hanging on for dear life. But Cifuentes is riding his differently. He is calm, hat-tipped, eyes locked, predicting every pitch, turn, and lunge of this beast of a Day 4 on St. Clair. One heck of an 8-second ride in the works.
