WV Nation helps Corps place fish habitat

According to Jerod Harman, West Virginia conservation director, B.A.S.S. Nation of West Virginia volunteers assisted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tygart Lake near Grafton, W.V., on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019.

Each winter, area residents drop off their Christmas trees at the Corps offices.

The trees are then repurposed and installed as fish habitat in Tygart Lake.

Volunteers from adult and high school clubs, along with a few volunteers from the Boy Scouts worked alongside the Corps to place about 250 trees in the lake.

The trees were installed near the new marina launch site, and blended in perfectly with other newly placed habitat that came from the construction of the launch site.

A few years ago, the WV DNR approved money to rebuild the marina launch site at Tygart.

After a year's work, and fighting ever-changing water levels, the project provides recreational boaters and anglers much better access and parking at Tygart.

Additionally, any trees, rocks, and concrete from the project was carefully placed in the lake, and the Christmas trees are the icing on the cake.
