Two weeks ago at Kentucky Lake, Chris Zaldain was leading on Day 1 with 24 pounds, 3 ounces, then had to scramble to make the Top 50 cut on Day 2 with 7-2, which left him in 40th place. He wasn’t happy about it then, but he’ll take a repeat performance today.
You’re going to see some similar flip-flops in the standings at Lake Travis. Zaldain needs to reverse the order of his this week. He starts the day in 74th place after catching a limit weighing 8-12 yesterday.
“Instead of chasing the shad spawn, which everyone is doing – getting healthy early throwing a jerkbait, throwing topwater – I decided to do something different,” Zaldain said. “It took me a while to get a bite, but I saw a 10-pounder, a legit 8-pounder and I saw all those 5s and 6s that I’d seen in practice.
“It was slick calm. I kind of gambled a little bit and tried to go in there and catch those big ones early in the low light conditions.
“If it starts out windy (Friday), I’m going to throw a big swimbait on them. They followed the swimbait out (Thursday), but they were just getting too good a look at it when it was slick calm.”
