Yesterday by 10 a.m. Frank Talley had caught all of his 19 pounds of weight. He only had seven bites all day, using a Strike King KVD 2.5 Squarebill during his morning flurry of activity. He later switched to a Strike King Thunder Cricket vibrating jig, the same lure he used to win last week at Lake Guntersville.
This morning, the squarebill is staying on the front deck. Talley switched to the Thunder Cricket.
“I need wind to make the squarebill work,” he explained to Andy Crawford, who is with Talley now.
That makes sense. Wind stimulates baitfish activity, and in turn the bass. Without wind, bass movement is minimal. We’ll see if last week’s winning bait produces the 15 pounds that Talley hopes to catch today.
