Bryan Schmitt, the Day 2 leader with 43-0, wasn’t a happy man most of this morning. On a clear, calm day when everyone expected the bass fishing to be better, Schmitt was struggling. However, that has changed for the better. The Deale, Md., resident has gradually climbed back into the unofficial lead on BassTrakk thanks to a 4-pounder at 11 a.m. It gives him a limit weighing 16-8.
“I’m happy again,” Scmitt said. “The bottom line is we’ve got one 2 1/2-pounder the we need to get rid of. I’m going to re-run the best stuff I had for largemouth one time, then we’re out. I’m going smallmouth fishing.”
Schmitt weighed bags of 21-11 on Day 1 and 21-5 on Day 2. He thought he got lucky yesterday.
“I pulled up on a spot (Friday) afternoon with about 10 minutes to go,” he recalled. “I threw a spybait out there. I’m reeling it in, something boils and a baitfish jumps out of the water. I reel up real quick, throw over there and catch a 4 1/2-pound smallmouth. That to me is very lucky.”
It seems you tend to make your own luck in bass fishing.
