Photographer James Overstreet reports thus far he’s only travelled 2 miles from the Smith Lake Dam Access, site of the takeoff.
There’s no reason to go any further. Yet. Overstreet’s mission is filling a photo gallery with quality images for the midday edition of Bassmaster.com.
He’s already found Jeff Kriet and Joey Nania with limits. Nania was culling and caught his limit within minutes after takeoff.
Overstreet is finding similar results elsehwere.
“Man, I’m only two miles from the takeoff and everywhere I look guys are catching spots. I just pulled up on a point and a guy caught about a three-pounder, held it up and put it in the box.”
It seems like if you are fishing a point then you are in luck. There are points aplenty on this lake. In fact, there are so many that its difficult to define what’s on the main lake or just a point within a small creek. Either way, the obvious fact is the spotted bass are shallow, likely spawning and that bodes well for the anglers targeting the lake’s favored species.
Another likelihood is the abundance of 15 pound limits coming to the scales. The spotted bass, averaging about 3 pounds, are abundant at that weight. If everyone is catching them it means the angler who lucks up on a bigger catch will have an edge.
