You would think that legendary pro angler Rick Clunn, who spent the majority of his 71 years living in Texas, would have some experience on Lake Travis. And he does, barely.
“I’ve been on it twice,” Clunn said yesterday. “I went sail-boating with my sister about 35 years ago, and I fished one Lone Star Bass tournament here about 30 years ago. Tommy Martin won it. I was second. I lost by two ounces, and I had a fish jump out of my livewell.”
Clunn is having a good morning in his return to Lake Travis. He currently has the 11th place bag of 11 pounds, which includes a 3-pounder. Amidst all the poor-mouthing pre-tournament talk, which is common before practice days become tournament reality, Clunn said, “There’s a real tendency to underestimate what these guys can do. Just about everybody will have a limit. I think 15 pounds a day will win it, and somebody will have a 20-pound bag.”
