Introduction to Fishing
My first fishing memory is with my dad, who got me hooked on the sport (as he is a fisherman too). We’d go around to various ponds and lakes in the afternoons and on weekends when I was probably only 4 years old! Those trips made me fall in love with fishing and created memories I’ll always cherish.
Experiences and Challenges
I’ve enjoyed many positive experiences so far as a female in the fishing community. I’ve made great friends, gained supportive sponsors, and met amazing people at different towns and lakes I’ve visited. The only negativity I’ve experienced has been related to politics within the school fishing community—things like “who your parents are is how you’re perceived” or how you’ll be treated. But I know that happens in all sports, not just fishing.
Perceptions and Attitudes
I truly feel that the fishing community, my peers, and the audience perceive women in the industry as equal to men now. I’ve never felt like I was seen any differently on the water just because I’m a girl.
Support Systems
I have a great support group within my fishing community, which includes Queen Tackle, Duckett Fishing, Cast Fishing, Funky Paint Lures, and Batteries Plus. They’ve always been there for me when I’ve needed them, and I’m really grateful for their support.
Representation and Visibility
I believe women are adequately represented in the media when they represent themselves. If you’re fishing to the best of your ability and being a good sport, you’ll be represented well, whether you’re male or female.
Changes Over Time
I’ve seen a little change in the acceptance of women since I started fishing, but since I’m only 13, I can’t say I’ve seen a lot yet. It’s exciting to be part of the sport now and see how it continues to grow for girls like me.
Personal Achievements
My best personal achievement was my first tournament with my dad. I learned what the tournament industry was like and how everything worked, and it made me realize just how much I would enjoy it. That first experience was really special and set me on the path I’m on today.
Fishing Style
My favorite style of fishing is topwater. I just love hearing the sound of “ka-koosh” and seeing the fish jump on top of the water, tackling the bait down. It brings so much excitement, especially when I catch a big one!
Advice for Aspiring Female Anglers
The best advice I would offer young women and girls interested in pursuing a career or hobby in fishing is to give it all you’ve got and always keep your head up, no matter what. These fish don’t know if it’s a male or female on the other end of the line—it’s all in the bait!
