Can Scott Canterbury chase down Jeff Gustafson? That’s the question most of us have been asking ourselves this morning, as Gussy has struggled to get bit and Canterbury has pieced together a small limit.
It seemed unlikely still, with the first four fish for the Alabama native only being decent keepers. But Canterbury just fired the first real shot, with a 3- and 1/2-pounder.
The challenger caught two 5- pounders late yesterday. If he does this again today, and Gussy does not catch a limit, Canterbury could claim his first Classic title with relative ease.
Canterbury started the day 7 pounds and 11 ounces back of Jeff Gustafson. He’s currently narrowed the gap to an estimated 3 ounces. A virtual tie. Anything the Canadian catches will go straight to his bottom line, until he reaches his limit. Canterbury will need a 4- pounder to replace a 1- pounder every time Gussy puts an 18- inch smallmouth in the boat to keep pace.
Can Canterbury do it? Three hours remain. The best three hours of the day for what he’s doing.
